In early 20th-century Vienna, Leopoldstadt was a cramped Jewish district, but factory owner Hermann Merz—a baptized Jew married to Catholic Gretl—has climbed the social ladder. Over fifty years, his family endures war, revolution, economic ruin, Nazi annexation, and the Holocaust. Through 40 actors spanning generations, this epic yet intimate play traces their story.
